What is Advance Care Planning? It is a process of thinking and planning in case there comes a time when you (seniors, teenagers, and everyone in between) can no longer make your own health care decisions. Who will make these decisions for you? Does this person know what you would or would not want done?
Most of us know to think ahead about the possibility of being unable to make future financial decisions. We take the precaution of naming someone as our Power of Attorney who can support us in caring for our financial needs should we lose the ability to make our own financial decisions.
But we need to ask ourselves:
- Do I take the same precautions when considering that I may not be able to make my own health care decisions in the future?
- Do I have a designated person to speak for me?
- Is it clear to him or her, what my values and beliefs are related to my health care?
- Is it clear to my health care providers?
